Bengaluru: Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Wednesday announced ‘Freedom Habba’, a first-of-its-kind, citizen-led Independence Day celebration that will transform Vidhana Soudha and its surrounding roads into a vibrant cultural corridor celebrating India’s unity, Karnataka’s heritage and Bengaluru’s diversity.

Designed as a people-centric celebration, the event aims to move Independence Day beyond a formal government function into a day-long festival of freedom, democracy, culture and civic participation. The celebrations will begin after the official Independence Day programme at Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground and continue until 10 pm on August 15.

Announcing the initiative, Krishna Byre Gowda said Independence Day belongs to every citizen and that Freedom Habba is intended to make people active participants rather than spectators.

“Freedom Habba is not a government event to watch. It is a festival for the people of Bengaluru to build, celebrate and own together. The true spirit of freedom is realised only when citizens themselves become part of the celebration,” he said.

Vidhana Soudha to become a cultural corridor

Residents from across Karnataka and from different states who now call Bengaluru home will showcase their languages, traditions, folk arts, music, dance and traditional attire. Communities representing Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Odia and the Northeastern states, along with representatives from Kodagu, Coastal Karnataka, North Karnataka and other regions, will participate.

Roads surrounding Vidhana Soudha will host community parades, cultural performances, regional cuisines, handicrafts and exhibitions, turning the seat of Karnataka’s legislature into a celebration of India’s “Unity in Diversity”.

Children to receive rare access inside Vidhana Soudha

A major highlight of the event will be opening the doors of Vidhana Soudha, including the majestic Legislative Assembly Hall, to children and young visitors through guided tours.

The celebrations will also feature a Children’s Fair, Freedom Village, storytelling sessions, interactive learning games, craft workshops and educational activities aimed at introducing children to democracy, citizenship and Karnataka’s legislative heritage.

“We are opening the doors of Vidhana Soudha to our children. Every child who walks through those doors on August 15 should return home with memories that last a lifetime. Democracy should not remain confined to textbooks—it should be experienced where it comes alive,” the minister said.

Parade, Living Museum and public celebrations

Freedom Habba will feature nearly 40 parade contingents representing India’s diverse cultures, Karnataka’s regions and various professions.

Other attractions include:

  • A Living Museum recreating India’s freedom movement.
  • District-wise pavilions showcasing Karnataka’s contribution to the Independence movement.
  • Constitution Square with displays on the Constituent Assembly and public readings of the Preamble.
  • A 200-foot public Freedom Wall for collaborative artwork.
  • Soul Santhe featuring over 120 curated stalls offering handicrafts, textiles, organic products, toys, food and lifestyle products.
  • Guided tours of Vidhana Soudha.
  • Evening cultural performances and a grand musical concert.
  • A spectacular fireworks display to conclude the celebrations.

‘Our Bengaluru belongs to everyone’

Krishna Byre Gowda said the initiative reflects the vision of “Nammuru. Nimmuru. Ellara Bengaluru” (Our City. Your City. Everyone’s Bengaluru) by celebrating every community that has made Bengaluru its home while remaining deeply rooted in Kannada language, culture and values.

The minister credited Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for envisioning the celebrations on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha and said the initiative reflects Karnataka’s inclusive spirit.

He appealed to citizens to participate actively as performers, volunteers, cultural ambassadors and visitors instead of merely watching the celebrations.

Registration for various events and activities will open through a dedicated Freedom Habba website and helpline, details of which will be announced within the next 48 hours through official government platforms.

Calling on families to make Independence Day a celebration of freedom, democracy and unity, Krishna Byre Gowda said Freedom Habba would showcase Bengaluru as a miniature India where multiple cultures, languages and traditions come together to define the city’s identity.
