Bengaluru: Every minute after a stroke is extremely valuable, and people should go without delay to the nearest stroke-ready hospital for emergency treatment, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor Dr Bhagavan said at an awareness walkathon in Bengaluru.
The 4.5-km walkathon and run was held near the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha to mark World Stroke Day, organised by the Karnataka Stroke Foundation with the university. The release, issued on November 2, is not consistent on the date: its text says November 1, while its photo caption says the eve of Kannada Rajyotsava.
Stroke treatment has seen revolutionary changes over the past 15 years, Dr Bhagavan said while inaugurating the event.
One lakh cases a year
About one lakh stroke cases are reported in Karnataka every year, and more than 30,000 patients are left with permanent disability, said Dr Suryanarayana Sharma, secretary of the foundation and head of neurology at Apollo Hospital, Bannerghatta Road.
Government and medical organisations need to raise more public awareness of stroke symptoms, the importance of emergency treatment and timely medical help, he said.
Patients who recovered after appropriate treatment were felicitated at the event. More than 1,000 people took part, including representatives of five major hospitals, neurologists, doctors and administrative professionals, the release said.
