YADGIR/BENGALURU:
Dalits in Surpur village are speaking out against a discriminatory tradition that takes place during the Devikera temple fair.
They are being forced to consume the meat of sacrificed buffaloes, which they find unjust. The temple fair, held on December 16 and 17, involves the sacrifice of animals for the goddesses Dyamavva, Maremma, and Palkamma. The Dalits claim that if they refuse to eat the meat, they are denied entry into the village.
In response to this practice, the Dalit community has submitted a petition to the District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, urging them to intervene.
Under the banner of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, community members have come together to address this issue. They have approached the district deputy commissioner, police superintendent, and zilla panchayat CEO, demanding an end to this discriminatory practice.
Mallikarjun Kranti, the state convenor of the Samiti, emphasized that not only Devikera but also several surrounding villages sacrifice buffaloes during their fairs. Additionally, various other animals are sacrificed during the December fairs in Surpur and Hunasagi taluks. Kranti insisted that the district administration must take immediate action to halt these practices.
