New Delhi: A penalty has been imposed on Karnataka-based M/s Dharwad Mishra Pedha and Food Processing Industry after a sample of its loose Motichoor Laddoo was declared substandard and found to contain tartrazine at 267.05 mg/kg, more than twice the permissible limit of 100 mg/kg, according to information released by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

The manufacturer was charged with manufacturing and supplying substandard Motichoor Laddoo to a distributor in violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, punishable under Section 51 of the Act.

Prohibition Orders and penalties have been imposed on several FBOs for food safety violations in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat & Karnataka.

FSSAI also said a penalty was imposed on M/s Shree Chemfood Pvt. Ltd., Kutch, Gujarat, after samples of its iodised salt were declared substandard and misbranded. Laboratory testing found inadequate iodine content, sodium chloride levels and insoluble matter. The company was found in violation of Sections 26(2)(ii), 26(2)(v) and 27(1) of the Act, with the violations punishable under Sections 51 and 52.

In a separate food-safety action in Rajasthan, prohibition orders were issued against M/s Shree Shyam Foods, M/s Bharat Food Products and M/s KDP Food Industry after samples of three products were declared unsafe under the FSS Act, 2006.

A sample of Green Chilli Sauce under the Natural Test Brand, manufactured by Shree Shyam Foods, was declared unsafe by the Public Health Laboratory, Jaipur. Ghee sold under the Delhi Dairy Brand and manufactured by Bharat Food Products was also declared unsafe by the Jaipur laboratory. A sample of Pure Desi Ghee under the Dairy Saras Brand, manufactured by KDP Food Industry, was declared unsafe by the Public Health Laboratory, Alwar.

The sale, distribution, manufacture, storage, display and offering for sale of these products have consequently been prohibited throughout Rajasthan with immediate effect for two months. Retailers, distributors, wholesalers, warehouses and others possessing the products have been directed to immediately remove them from sale and display.

The food business operators have also been directed to submit certificates showing compliance with sufficient remedial measures. Failure to comply may lead to an extension of the prohibition period, while violations of the orders may attract prosecution, suspension or cancellation of licences and monetary penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
