Phone Found in Prajwal Revanna’s Prison Barrack; DGP Alok Kumar Flags Andhra-Origin Airtel SIM, Orders Probe
Bengaluru: A mobile phone recovered from former MP Prajwal Revanna’s barrack at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison has triggered a probe into how the device entered the prison and was being used, with Prison and Correctional Services DGP Alok Kumar saying the SIM card found in the phone was reportedly from Andhra Pradesh and had been active since March.
Kumar said the CCB conducted a raid following the recovery and an investigation is underway to establish how the phone reached the barrack and the manner in which it was used.
He also said Revanna had been warned for not wearing the prescribed white prison uniform but continued to violate the instructions.
According to Kumar, a large number of Andhra Pradesh-origin Airtel SIM cards are being used inside the prison. While a mobile jammer is installed and networks of other SIM cards are not accessible within the premises, he said an Airtel network on an Andhra-origin SIM was reportedly functioning.
Kumar said officials have been instructed to make Airtel a co-accused in the case and initiate action against the company.
Action has also been taken against prison personnel in connection with the incident, he said. An official against whom action had been initiated was transferred on Tuesday morning, and the mobile phone was subsequently found in the evening.
Responding to allegations about social media use, Kumar said no social media platform had been directly opened. He suggested the network may have been accessed through the Airtel 5G connection.
Kumar said Wi-Fi inside the prison had already been switched off and warned that further action would follow if it was established that the prison Wi-Fi network had been used.
