Bengaluru, June 26: A 50-year-old contract labourer engaged in Namma Metro pillar lighting works died after suffering an electric shock during excavation work near Trinity Metro Station on Thursday afternoon.

According to a media statement issued by BMRCL Chief Public Relations Officer, the victim was a contract labourer employed by M/s M R Electricals, the contractor executing Namma Metro pillar lighting works.

The incident occurred at around 3:52 pm near Pillar No. 153, outside Trinity Metro Station, while earth pit excavation was being carried out for the lighting project.

BMRCL said that during the course of the work, the labourer accidentally came into contact with an electric source and suffered an electric shock. He was immediately shifted to the Emergency Ward of St. Philomena’s Hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The corporation stated that the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined and that a detailed investigation is being carried out by the concerned authorities.

“The exact cause of the incident is being ascertained, and the concerned authorities are carrying out a detailed investigation. Further information will be shared after the investigation is completed,” the BMRCL Chief Public Relations Officer said in the statement.

BMRCL also expressed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, local reports identified the deceased as Guruvappa (50), a resident of Jigani.

According to local accounts, Guruvappa was reportedly engaged in earth excavation for an earthing connection near the Metro pillar using a drilling machine when the equipment is alleged to have come into contact with an underground electric cable. The cable was reportedly damaged, resulting in the electric shock that proved fatal.

These details have not been officially confirmed by BMRCL and remain subject to the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Police have registered a case at the Ulsoor Police Station and have commenced further investigation into the incident.
