Congress Leader Suraj Hegde Dies of Heart Attack; Grandson of Former Karnataka CM Devaraj Urs Was AICC Secretary
Bengaluru, June 8: Senior Congress leader Suraj Hegde, grandson of former Karnataka Chief Minister Devaraj Urs, passed away following a heart attack, triggering grief across Congress circles in Karnataka and beyond.
According to party sources, Suraj Hegde suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday night and was rushed to a hospital. However, doctors were unable to save him and he succumbed during treatment.
Hegde was serving as an AICC Secretary and had also held key responsibilities as the Congress in-charge for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. He was regarded as an active organisational leader and played an important role in strengthening the party structure.
In Karnataka, he had also served as the Vice-President of the State Guarantee Implementation Committee and was associated with several organisational initiatives of the Congress.
Congress Loses a Key Organisational Leader
Party leaders described Hegde as a committed Congress worker who carried forward the political legacy of Devaraj Urs while building his own identity within the organisation.
His contributions to party-building efforts, particularly in southern states, earned him recognition among Congress leaders at both the state and national levels.
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed grief over Hegde’s demise and paid tribute through a social media post.
The Chief Minister said Suraj Hegde had made a unique contribution to strengthening the Congress party and that his sudden demise was a significant loss to the organisation.
“We have lost an active and committed leader who worked tirelessly for the party. His contribution to strengthening the Congress organisation will always be remembered,” Shivakumar said.
End of a Political Legacy
The death of Suraj Hegde marks the loss of a prominent member of the family of former Chief Minister Devaraj Urs, one of Karnataka’s most influential political figures.
Congress leaders and workers across Karnataka have expressed condolences, remembering Hegde as a dynamic organiser and a leader deeply committed to the party’s growth and grassroots expansion.
His passing is being viewed as a major setback for the Congress organisation, particularly at a time when the party is focusing on strengthening its presence across southern India.
