Bengaluru: Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) Commissioner K N Ramesh on Thursday, November 5, inspected a stormwater drain behind Rainbow Hospital on Bannerghatta Road and ordered that desilting begin immediately, according to a corporation press release.
The drain, a rajakaluve, is choked with construction and solid waste, causing stagnant water and a foul smell. The commissioner directed officials to remove unauthorised slabs and obstructions over the drain and to survey its original course as recorded in revenue department documents. The release says the drain carries water from Sarakki lake towards Madivala lake, and that the stretch was covered with a slab and given an artificial bend, which officials were asked to review.
The commissioner also said permanent measures were needed so that water flows freely and the area does not flood during the rains.
On the same visit, he inspected the roads, footpaths and drain areas around the JP Nagar 4th Phase Metro station, including the drain in front of Vaishnavi Apartment. He directed officials to widen and maintain the footpath used by people leaving the station, and to install a divider on the service road so traffic on the main road is not obstructed. The release says these steps follow directions Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda gave during an earlier inspection there.
