Bengaluru: The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday, November 5, approved a 2026 bill to set up the Sannati Development Authority, Kalaburagi district in-charge minister Priyank Kharge said in a statement. The cabinet met under Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.
The statement says the cabinet also agreed to the proposal to frame a separate Act that would give the authority legal powers. The authority would be a statutory body, chaired by the Kalaburagi district in-charge minister, with a Minorities Welfare minister as co-chair, and members drawn from ministers, MLAs, senior officials and local body representatives. A commissioner, of at least deputy secretary rank, would be its chief executive.
Sannati, in Chittapur taluk of Kalaburagi district, is an ancient Buddhist centre with Ashokan inscriptions and Buddhist-era remains, the release says. The bill’s aim is to develop it as an international heritage, cultural and tourist destination, and to conserve its heritage sites.
The authority would prepare a development plan for approval by the government before taking up works such as roads, street lights, sanitation, drainage, drinking water, and other facilities for tourists and residents.
The release does not say when the bill will come before the legislature, whether it has been passed, or when the authority will be formally set up.
