Chitradurga: Chief Minister D K Shivakumar will lay the foundation stone on Tuesday for a ₹244-crore project to fill 16 tanks and Gayathri Reservoir in Javanagondanahalli hobli of Hiriyur taluk, Minor Irrigation and Science and Technology Minister Dr Ajay Dharam Singh said.
The programme will be held at 12.30 pm at the Government Primary School grounds in Dindavara. Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister Dr G Parameshwara, ministers and elected representatives will take part.
Why the project
It has been conceived to address recurring drought, declining tank storage and falling groundwater levels. In several parts of the hobli, borewells are reportedly being drilled to depths of nearly 1,000 feet, the release said.
How it will work
The project will use 0.307 TMC of water. Of the 16 tanks, 10 are under the Minor Irrigation Department and six under the Zilla Panchayat.
A submersible diversion weir will be built across the Vedavathi River, and water will be lifted through a jackwell and pump house to the tanks. The work includes 2000 HP VT pumps, about 28.13 km of MS pipeline and 16.82 km of HDPE pipeline.
The project received administrative approval on July 21, 2026. The tender process is complete, and the works are targeted for completion within 30 months.
“This ₹244-crore project is a major step towards strengthening long-term water security in the Hiriyur region. It will help improve groundwater levels, support drinking-water security and benefit agricultural activity,” Dr Ajay Dharam Singh said.
