BENGALURU:

Amid the scare of the deadly coronavirus, traders in Chickpet and neighbouring localities have decided to shut shop for a week, with immediate effect.

The decision was taken after more than 25 people in and around the area were reportedly infected with Covid-19.

Various trade associations, including the Electric Merchants Association, the Jewellers Association, the Silk Cloth Association, the Switch Gear Association and the Hardware Association, have decided to down shutters in the area.

“The decision has been taken voluntarily as coronavirus cases have increased in the last few days. It is a serious matter and it is time to take some tough measures to control the spread of the deadly virus in the community,” said a businessman who did not want to disclose his identity.

“Since the locality has many small shops and it is known for all kinds of wholesale business, customers from all parts of the state visit here. And it would be very risky to conduct business at this juncture,” said a member of the Electric Merchants Association.

Former BJP corporator AL Shivakumar said that many other associations would also join the self lockdown in next coming days.
