‘Decorated’ DSP Brajesh Kumar’s assets 3 times more than his known sources of income, alleges FIR

NEW DELHI/BENGALURU:

In a startling case of corruption within the country’s top investigative agency, the CBI has booked one of its own top-ranking officers, a Deputy Superintendent of Police formerly based in Bengaluru and currently posted in Delhi, on a charge of amassing assets worth Rs 1.94 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income. Ironically, the accused officer is a recipient of the Union Home Minister’s medal for excellence in investigation.

The CBI registered an FIR in New Delhi on Sunday, naming DSP Brajesh Kumar, his father Sheo Yogi Singh, a retired Patna High Court employee, and mother Lalita Singh as accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

According to the FIR, between 2018 and 2021 Kumar amassed assets worth Rs 2.09 crore in his and his parents’ names.

Kumar was promoted as DSP in 2017 and was among 15 CBI officers who received the Union Home Minister’s medal for excellence in investigation in 2019.

Flats in Prestige property

The CBI received a tip-off that the officer had purchased two flats totalling Rs 1.91 crore in his parents’ names in Bengaluru’s Prestige Royal Gardens in a span of nine months in 2020. According to the agency, no loan was taken for the purchase.

According to the central agency, Kumar’s father is a retired assistant registrar of the Patna High Court and receives a monthly pension of Rs 65,000, while his mother is a home-maker. The CBI alleged that another property had been acquired in the name of Kumar’s wife Sweety Singh in Subhodaya Laurel of Bengaluru.

Kumar joined the CBI as a sub-inspector and was promoted as DSP in 2017 when he was posted at the banking, frauds and securities cell in Bengaluru, which handles high-profile fraud cases. He has also served as DSP with the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch in Bengaluru.

The CBI has alleged that Kumar and his parents were in possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs 1.94 crore, 302 per cent more than their known sources of income.
