Bengaluru: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has successfully used advanced robotic technology to detect underground pipeline and sewerage defects across Bengaluru, helping avoid road excavation at 399 locations over the last six months and significantly reducing inconvenience to commuters and motorists.

According to BWSSB, the robotic inspection system introduced under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has enabled engineers to identify leaks and underground faults without digging up roads, thereby reducing traffic disruption in the city.

The advanced robotic technology was officially launched in November last year and has since been deployed extensively across Bengaluru for underground inspections.

32 Kilometres of Robotic Inspection Conducted

BWSSB Chairman Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar stated that robotic systems have scientifically inspected nearly 32,661 metres (32.66 km) of underground pipelines and sewer networks during the past six months.

The inspections helped authorities accurately identify 394 underground defects while minimising damage to roads and surrounding infrastructure.

399 Road Excavations Avoided

Officials said the robotic systems successfully prevented major road digging at 399 locations, which would otherwise have caused severe traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public.

“In a city like Bengaluru, road excavation creates massive inconvenience for commuters and motorists. Earlier, locating underground leakages or sewer defects required extensive road cutting. With robotic technology, the machines move inside pipelines and accurately detect faults without damaging roads,” Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar explained.

He added that the initiative has helped prevent continuous excavation along nearly 32 kilometres of underground pipeline stretches, providing major relief to daily commuters.

Faster Complaint Resolution

BWSSB further stated that out of 404 complaints received during the six-month period, 399 complaints have already been successfully resolved, while the remaining five are being addressed on priority basis.

Focus on Smart and Citizen-Friendly Infrastructure

The Water Board said it remains committed to improving civic services while ensuring minimal disruption to Bengaluru’s road infrastructure and traffic movement.

Officials added that BWSSB will continue adopting modern and citizen-friendly technologies in the coming years to improve urban infrastructure management and public service delivery across the city.
