A BJP win will be its first in Sira since Independence

BENGALURU:

With the clock ticking for the November 3 Sira by-polls, the general impression is that the public mood is in favour of the ruling BJP.

Sira is a general constituency in Tumkur district. It has more than 2 lakh voters. While it has a substantial backward class population, all 3 contending parties have fielded Vokkaliga candidates.

BJP candidate Rajesh Gowda, a doctor by profession, is confident of victory with the support of the Chief Minister’s son and BJP state vice- president BY Vijayendra, who has been stationed there ever since the elections were announced. A win for the BJP will be its first here since Independence.

Kuruba factor

The Kuruba community will play a decisive role in the elections as it has around 18,000 voters, of whom 12,000 are registered voters. BJP leaders claim that at least half of the registered voters will cast their ballots in favour of Rajesh Gowda.

Vijayendra has refuted the claims of Congress leaders that the BJP does not have any base in Sira assembly constituency. “People have expressed faith in the Yediyurappa-led BJP government in Karnataka. It is his 40-years effort which has brought the party to power in the state. We will win both Sira and Rajarajeshwarinagar assembly constituencies. People are fed up of the Congress and the JDS as both parties have ignored development work, including irrigation and water-related projects,” Vijayendra said.

Development card

Rajesh Gowda claimed that people have decided to vote in favour of the BJP as they know that if they vote in favour of the JDS or the Congress, they won’t see any development in Sira.

The Congress has fielded old warhorse TB Jayachandra, who is making his seventh electoral attempt. He lost to the JDS’s B Sathyanarayana in the 2018 elections — the bypoll is being held due to the death of Sathyanarayana.

Ammajamma, wife of the late Sathyanarayana, is the JDS candidate from Sira.
