Bengaluru West City Corporation Targets 1,100 km Footpath Development, Road Safety and Scientific Waste Management
Bengaluru, June 13: The Bengaluru West City Corporation on saturday organized a workshop and review meeting for engineers and civic officials to accelerate footpath development, strengthen waste management systems and implement the Greater Bengaluru Authority’s flagship Suraksha 75 initiative across its jurisdiction.
Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, who attended the meeting, directed officials to prioritize pedestrian infrastructure, road safety and systematic civic maintenance. He instructed engineering teams to undertake an ambitious programme to develop 10 kilometres of footpaths in every ward, with a target of completing approximately 2.5 kilometres every week. The initiative aims to improve nearly 1,100 kilometres of ward roads and pedestrian pathways within the Bengaluru West City Corporation limits.
The Chief Commissioner stressed that road curbs, footpaths and drainage systems must be maintained to high standards. He directed officials to complete desilting operations along roads using dedicated machinery and ensure that underpasses are equipped with adequate lighting and beautification measures. He said all engineering works should be monitored closely by Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers to ensure quality and timely completion.
West City Corporation Commissioner Dr. Rajendra K.V. said the engineering wing serves as the backbone of the civic administration and must take the lead in transforming urban infrastructure. He emphasized the need for proper drainage networks, shoulder drains and well-maintained roads, while also highlighting the importance of protecting pedestrian rights and addressing public grievances promptly.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of Suraksha 75, a key urban redesign and road safety initiative of the Greater Bengaluru Authority. Officials discussed strategies to improve road safety, redesign critical junctions and create safer public spaces for commuters and pedestrians.
As part of the action plan, Assistant Executive Engineers were directed to develop at least one model ward each. Officials were also instructed to clean and beautify nearly 200 identified black spots across the corporation area. Measures to strengthen waste management infrastructure were discussed, including establishing dedicated dry waste collection facilities and exploring the feasibility of setting up waste kiosks for garbage collection.
The Commissioner directed officials to intensify public awareness campaigns on segregation of wet and dry waste at source. Health officials were instructed to take strict action against bulk waste generators violating waste management norms and ensure greater compliance with trade licence regulations. Within the next month, health officials have been asked to conduct inspections along 10-kilometre stretches of roads and initiate necessary action wherever violations are found.
Officials were further directed to assign specific roads to Assistant Executive Engineers and Junior Engineers and hold them accountable for maintenance and monitoring. Contract engineers were also warned that action would be taken against those failing to perform their responsibilities satisfactorily.
The meeting emphasized the need for regular inspection and maintenance of skywalks, bus shelters, underpasses, flyovers and pedestrian subways. Stormwater drains, desilting operations and pothole repairs were identified as priority areas requiring immediate attention to ensure smoother mobility and better civic infrastructure.
A technical workshop was conducted by Arun Pai, Founder of Vakaluru NGO, focusing on footpath development, road infrastructure and scientific waste management. The session discussed best practices and implementation strategies for improving approximately 1,100 kilometres of roads and pedestrian pathways across the corporation area.
The workshop was attended by Additional Commissioner (Development) Kavitha Rajaram, Chief Engineers Basavaraj Kabade and Swayamprabha, Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, Deputy General Managers, Assistant Executive Engineers, Assistant General Managers, Assistant Engineers, Junior Engineers, contract engineers, zonal marshals and divisional marshals.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at creating safer roads, improving pedestrian mobility, strengthening waste management systems and enhancing the overall quality of urban infrastructure across the Bengaluru West City Corporation area.
