Bengaluru, May 8: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has intensified its citywide crackdown against illegal water and sewerage connections, misuse of drinking water and unpaid utility dues through its special enforcement unit known as the “Blue Force.”

In the last five months, the BWSSB has physically inspected 54,625 buildings across Bengaluru and disconnected 11,217 illegal water and sewerage connections, generating nearly ₹55 crore in additional revenue for the board.

According to BWSSB officials, the massive enforcement drive has also helped save nearly 1,000 million litres of drinking water, much of which was previously being used illegally and remained outside the official billing network.

Major Highlights of the Operation

The action was carried out across all four zones of Bengaluru — North, South, East and West.

Key figures released by the BWSSB include:

  • 54,625 buildings inspected
  • 11,217 total connections disconnected
  • 9,751 illegal drinking water connections cut
  • 1,466 illegal sewerage connections disconnected

The East Zone recorded the highest number of disconnections with 3,151 illegal links removed, while the South Zone saw the highest number of inspections with officials physically verifying 13,908 buildings.

₹50 Crore Collected Through Pro-Rata Charges

BWSSB stated that the sustained operation has significantly reduced revenue leakage caused by unauthorized water usage and sewerage connections.

Following strict action against violators, many property owners reportedly initiated the process of regularising their illegal connections, resulting in the collection of nearly ₹50 crore through pro-rata charges.

Officials said the enforcement drive has also brought illegally consumed water under the board’s formal billing framework.

1,000 Million Litres Water Brought Under Billing Network

According to BWSSB, the crackdown has led to monthly savings of nearly 210 million litres of treated drinking water.

The board stated that around 1,000 million litres of water, which was earlier being consumed through unauthorized means, has now been integrated into the official billing system.

As a result, the Water Board is now generating approximately ₹5 crore in additional monthly revenue.

BWSSB Chairman’s Statement

BWSSB Chairman Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar said the board’s top priority is to provide reliable water supply and efficient sewerage services to every citizen under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

He stated that illegal water usage and unauthorized sewerage connections place heavy pressure on civic infrastructure and negatively impact service quality.

Dr. Manohar warned that the Blue Force teams would continue taking strict action without any leniency against violators and urged citizens to obtain official Cauvery water and sewerage connections.

About the ‘Blue Force’

The special Blue Force unit was launched by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar during the last week of November 2025.

Currently, 18 dedicated Blue Force teams are operating across Bengaluru. Each team consists of: One ex-serviceman, One supervisor and Two disconnection staff members.

BWSSB officials said the teams have been specifically formed to ensure disciplined and effective enforcement operations across the city.
