Bengaluru: Amid drought conditions in Karnataka and depleting water levels in the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) reservoir, the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has imposed penalties on 692 consumers for misusing Cauvery drinking water.
According to the BWSSB, the consumers were found using drinking water for purposes such as washing vehicles and construction activities. Each violator has been fined ₹5,000, taking the total penalty collected to ₹34.60 lakh.
Zone-wise, penalties were imposed on 86 consumers in the North Zone, 100 in the East Zone, 165 in the West Zone, 206 in the South Zone and 135 in the Central Zone.
The action comes as the state faces water scarcity and authorities step up enforcement to prevent the misuse of potable water.
