Bengaluru: In a shocking case from the city, a software engineer seeking treatment for a sexual health issue was allegedly conned by a fake roadside “guru” and later diagnosed with serious kidney damage. The victim filed a complaint at Jnanabharati Police Station, leading to a case being registered against Vijay Guruji and Vijayalakshmi Ayurvedic Store.

According to the complaint, the techie—who got married in 2023—was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kengeri for sexual dysfunction. During this period, he noticed a banner on a roadside tent promising “Immediate cure for sexual problems” and approached the man posing as a guru.

The accused, identifying himself as Vijay Guruji, allegedly directed the victim to purchase a so-called “Devaraj Booti” from an Ayurvedic store in Yeshwanthpur for ₹1.6 lakh per gram, insisting the medicine would work only if paid in cash and purchased alone.

After buying the alleged herbal product, the victim continued treatment under the fake guru, who kept demanding money for various oils, powders, and follow-up therapies. When the techie expressed inability to pay, the accused allegedly threatened that “earlier treatment would fail” and pressured him to borrow money.

Fearing health complications, the victim reportedly took loans and ended up paying a total of ₹48 lakh. Despite the enormous amount spent, he did not recover. Instead, he began experiencing severe health issues. Subsequent medical tests revealed kidney damage, police said.

The accused continued to intimidate the victim, claiming that “more treatment” was necessary and warning of “life-threatening consequences” if he stopped paying.

Following the complaint, Bengaluru South-West DCP Anita B. Haddannavar confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. She added that roadside “Ayurvedic tents” offering unlicensed medical treatments are being cleared.

Police have warned citizens to remain cautious about fraudulent health-cure claims made in public spaces.
