Mandya: In a dramatic rescue near Srirangapatna, a 20-year-old law student from Bengaluru’s Electronic City, identified as Pavithra, was saved after surviving nearly 12 hours in the fast-flowing River Cauvery by clinging to a floating tree branch.
According to officials, Pavithra attempted to end her life by jumping off the Nimishamba temple bridge into the swollen river on Wednesday evening. Swept away by the strong currents for nearly 5 km, she managed to grab hold of a tree branch that had drifted downstream.
Villagers near the riverbank were alerted by her cries for help early the next morning. Local residents immediately informed the authorities, following which a fire and emergency services team rushed to the spot and pulled her to safety.
The girl, who is studying law at a private college in Bengaluru, was immediately taken to the Srirangapatna government hospital. Doctors confirmed she was physically stable but mentally distressed after spending the entire night in the water.
“She held onto a tree branch all night, calling for help. Her presence of mind saved her life,” said a rescue team member.
Sources said Pavithra told rescuers she had been feeling emotionally overwhelmed, although the exact cause of her suicide attempt remains unclear. The local police are investigating the incident and have contacted her family.
Authorities have lauded the bravery of the fire service personnel and the alertness of the villagers that helped avert a tragedy. The incident has sparked conversations around mental health, especially among students, and highlighted the need for emotional support systems.
This extraordinary survival story has also drawn public attention to the dangers of untreated mental health issues and the importance of community vigilance in saving lives.
