BENGALURU:

Karnataka’s capital city has well and truly been facing the brunt of Covid infections and casualties since the beginning of July. In the first 5 days of the month, 5,000 infections were detected and 50 deaths confirmed.

On Sunday, 1,235 new cases were recorded, the highest number yet in a single day. On the same day, 16 deaths were confirmed. The number of active cases is now 8,167. Another worrying factor is that the number of people in ICUs has reached 132. The total number of new cases has reached 9,580.

Local spread

Due to what is now clearly a community spread, thousand-plus cases are cropping up every day. There is no such rampant increase in infections in any other district in the state.

Worse, the virus has not spared even health staff — 18 lab technicians in BBMP’s health department, who were working on collecting and testing throat swab samples from different zones, have been infected.

What is alarming is that the number of cases reported in just 5 days of July was higher than the total number of reported cases (about 3,000) from March to the end of June.

Bengaluru’s ‘corona’ status as of Monday morning is: 9,580 infected, 1,267 cured, 8,167 active, 145 dead.
