Bengaluru, July 5: Chief Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Maheshwar Rao, announced that the city administration is committed to permanently eliminating black spots and achieving long-term solutions to solid waste challenges.
Speaking at a meeting with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) from the East Zone on Saturday, Rao underscored the need for sustainable and zone-specific strategies to address waste dumping and urban hygiene. “Our objective is not just temporary fixes but permanent elimination of garbage-prone black spots across the city,” he said.
Rao emphasized that stringent monitoring and penalties are already being imposed on those found dumping waste in public areas. He further stressed the importance of decentralized waste management, including setting up composting units and bio-methanation plants close to the source of waste generation.
Zonal Commissioner Snehal stated that a comprehensive action plan is being drawn up to improve waste handling in the East Zone. She also announced the launch of a new anti-single-use plastic campaign. Citizens can now report waste-related concerns via WhatsApp at 9448197197 or call the toll-free helpline 1533.
Key suggestions from RWAs and citizens included:
- Appointing sanitation volunteers to support local cleanliness drives.
- Preventing illegal waste dumping along roadsides, stormwater drains, and empty plots.
- Increasing the number of auto-tippers in localities like Indiranagar.
- Conducting door-to-door awareness drives on segregation and disposal.
- Setting up composting units in every ward.
- Providing separate bins for wet and dry waste.
- Strictly enforcing the ban on single-use plastic.
- Taking action against the roadside disposal of bulky items like furniture, mattresses, and commodes.
