Hours after a shocking video of a so-called ‘burial’ of corona victims in Ballari went viral, Ballari Deputy Commissioner SS Nakul was jolted into action and ordered an inquiry into the horrendous incident.
The inquiry will be conducted by additional deputy commissioner PS Manjunatha.

As in other parts of Karnataka, deaths from Covid-19 are on the rise in Ballari. There were 9 deaths on Sunday and 5 on Monday. As of Tuesday noon, the Covid toll in the district stands at 28, according to the DC.

As if news of the fatalities was not bad enough, the inhuman manner in which victims’ bodies are disposed of — as captured by the video — has agitated netizens all over.
The state Health Department had suggested that funerals of Covid victims be conducted in one place. Some barren land on the outskirts of Ballari was earmarked for the purpose.
But in a gross misinterpretation of the Health Department’s intentions, the video shows bodybags containing the victims’ remains being unceremoniously dumped into a common pit.
The horror is compounded by the irony that the ‘dumpers’ are not some stray persons rounded up for the ‘work’ but staff of the Health Department. That begs the question: what SOPs — if at all — on disposal of Covid victims’ bodies have been communicated to its health staff by the department?
