Civic chief cites 2nd Covid wave fears, also wants public gyms closed
BENGALURU:
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is all set to send a proposal to the Karnataka government seeking fresh restrictions amid a rise in Covid-19 cases in the city. The proposed restrictions include shutting down party halls, gyms and swimming pools in apartment complexes in the city.
Speaking to the media on Friday, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad said, “In apartments’ common areas – be it party halls, gyms or swimming pools — people are interacting with each other and we are seeing many cases coming up. So we are proposing to shut these too.”
Gyms in BBMP parks should also be closed as these are used by the public and could lead to transmissions, Prasad said.
The proposal comes in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases in Karnataka, of which a majority are being reported from Bengaluru Urban.
Govt to take call
Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said a decision on the BBMP proposal would be taken after discussions with Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa. “We will take a look at it, discuss it with the Chief Minister and then arrive at a decision,” he said.
