Bengaluru: In a proactive public interest initiative ahead of the monsoon, Bengaluru South Municipal Commissioner and Chairman of the Disaster Management Authority, K.N. Ramesh, held a detailed video interaction with Resident Welfare Association (RWA) representatives to review flood preparedness and mitigation measures.

This marks the first such structured engagement with citizen representatives to assess ground-level concerns and strengthen disaster readiness. The Commissioner invited feedback, grievances, and suggestions from RWAs, while also briefing them on the preventive steps already undertaken by the civic body.

During the interaction, key flood-prone areas such as Bannerghatta Main Road, Puttenahalli–Sarjapur Lake Road, Vajrahalli, Metro station zones, Bilekahalli Ranka Colony, HSR Layout Sector 7, Koramangala 1st Block, Silk Board Junction, Junnasandra, Ambalipura, and Trinity Circle were discussed. Officials assured that necessary preventive measures would be taken in coordination with concerned departments.

Key Issues Raised by RWAs:

  • Desilting of drains and shoulder drains
  • Waterlogging and drainage blockages
  • Traffic disruption during rains
  • Solid waste accumulation in stormwater drains

Multi-Department Preparedness:
The civic body has already conducted multiple pre-monsoon coordination meetings with Traffic Police, Fire and Emergency Services, BESCOM, Forest Department, and Engineering teams. Joint inspections have been carried out in vulnerable areas to assess risks and ensure readiness for emergency situations.

Authorities have identified flood-prone zones and issued directions for rapid response planning in case of heavy rainfall.

Immediate Action Measures:

  • Urgent desilting of drains and proper disposal of sludge
  • Fast-tracking road repair works in affected areas
  • Removal of dangerous trees and dry branches in coordination with the Forest Department

Public Health Measures:
In coordination with the Health Department, steps have been taken to prevent waterborne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, cholera, and malaria. Measures include controlling stagnant water, ensuring hygiene in eateries, and improving waste management systems.

Emergency Control Rooms Activated:
To address public complaints swiftly, control rooms have been set up:

  • Jayanagar Zone-1: 080-26566362 / 080-22975703 | Mobile: 9480685704
  • Bommanahalli Zone-2: 080-25732447 / 080-25735642 | Mobile: 9480685707

Additionally, efforts are underway to establish emergency control rooms at division and sub-division levels for faster response.

The Commissioner emphasized that continuous engagement with citizens and officials will be maintained to ensure effective implementation of flood prevention measures during the monsoon.

RWA representatives and local residents appreciated the initiative, stating that direct interaction with authorities and inclusion in planning will significantly improve disaster management outcomes in the city.
