Bengaluru: Following intense rainfall across the city, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has assured that all rain-related complaints and civic issues will be resolved within three hours. Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed officials across all municipal zones to remain on the ground and ensure swift response to emergencies.

The directive comes after several parts of central Bengaluru recorded heavy rainfall of up to 77 mm, particularly in Cottonpet, Binnypet, Subhash Nagar, Jagajeevanram Nagar, and KR Market areas. Other zones reported moderate rainfall. Civic teams have been deployed to clear blocked shoulder drains, remove waste from gratings, and restore smooth vehicular movement in waterlogged stretches.

Officials are personally supervising operations in the worst-affected areas, while fallen trees are being cleared from major roads to prevent disruption.

Rainfall and Impact Overview:
A sudden spell of heavy rain with hailstorms around 5:00 PM resulted in an average rainfall of 60 mm across Bengaluru. Central zones recorded the highest rainfall at 77.6 mm, while some northern areas recorded as low as 8 mm.

The GBA control room received multiple complaints related to waterlogging, fallen trees, infrastructure damage, and traffic disruptions. All complaints are being addressed on priority through coordinated efforts.

Major Incidents Reported:

  • A tragic wall collapse at Bowring Hospital in Shivajinagar claimed seven lives and left two injured. Senior officials, including the Chief Commissioner, Police Commissioner, and Fire Services personnel, rushed to the spot for rescue operations.
  • In South Bengaluru, a 35-year-old man identified as Raghu died due to electrocution near Sarakki bus stop on Bannerghatta Road around 8:25 PM.
  • Minor injuries were reported in North Bengaluru due to falling trees, while East Bengaluru reported no major damage.

In West Bengaluru, areas such as Navrang, Dr. Rajkumar Road, and ISKCON Temple Road witnessed multiple tree falls, causing temporary power disruptions. BESCOM teams are working on restoration.

Waterlogging and Tree Fall Data:

  • Waterlogging complaints: 68 (South: 29, Central: 19, West: 12, East: 5, North: 3)
  • Tree falls: 170 (Central: 67, West: 55, South: 23, North: 24, East: 1)
  • Fallen branches: 408 (Central: 131, West: 121, South: 82, North: 70, East: 4)

Out of these, 118 trees and branches have already been cleared, and the remaining are being attended to on priority.

Bowring Hospital Tragedy Details:
The wall collapse near Bowring Hospital resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including four men, two women, and one girl child. Three critically injured persons are being treated at Victoria Hospital, while others with minor injuries are receiving treatment at Bowring Hospital. The government has announced ₹5 lakh compensation for each deceased and assured free treatment for the injured.

24/7 Monitoring and Response:
The Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) is functioning round-the-clock, coordinating with all departments to respond to public complaints in real time.

Chief Commissioner’s Directions:
In a high-level review meeting, Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao instructed all officials to intensify pre-monsoon preparedness and ensure that no area faces prolonged disruption.

  • All fallen trees and branches must be cleared by the next morning
  • No obstructions should remain on roads
  • Fire and emergency teams must be deployed wherever required
  • Designated locations must be identified for disposal of debris

Senior officials, including Special Commissioner Sushma Godbole, municipal commissioners, BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar, and representatives from fire services and engineering departments, attended the review meeting.

The civic body reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety, rapid response, and efficient management of rain-related emergencies across Bengaluru.
