Chamarajanagar: In a significant relief for families affected by the Chamarajanagar oxygen tragedy, the Karnataka government has decided to provide government jobs to the kin of the 36 victims who lost their lives due to oxygen shortage five years ago.

The tragedy, which occurred at the Chamarajanagar District Hospital, had claimed 36 lives, leaving their families devastated and struggling for survival. Many families lost their sole breadwinners and were pushed into severe financial hardship, enduring years of distress and uncertainty.

Despite repeated assurances over the years, including promises made by political leaders during campaigns and public events, the affected families had to wait for nearly five years for concrete action. Protests and appeals by the victims’ families had continued, seeking justice and rehabilitation.

The breakthrough came after the state cabinet, in a meeting held last September, approved the proposal to provide government jobs to the families based on their educational qualifications. In the first phase, 21 beneficiaries have been selected, while the remaining cases are being processed after resolving technical issues.

The government has now finalized April 21 as the date to distribute appointment letters to the selected candidates. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar are scheduled to visit Chamarajanagar on the same day, during which the appointment letters will be formally handed over.

Families of the victims have expressed relief and hope following the announcement, stating that the long-awaited decision will help them rebuild their lives. However, they have also urged the government to expedite job allocation for the remaining beneficiaries.

The move marks a crucial step towards fulfilling a long-pending promise and providing support to families who endured years of hardship following one of the state’s most tragic healthcare incidents.
