Bengaluru: A 29-year-old tech professional allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Bagalakunte on the outskirts of Bengaluru, in a case that has sparked debate over superstition and psychological distress.
The deceased has been identified as Vidya Jyothi, the second daughter of Umesh and Kavitha. She was employed with Bosch and was reportedly preparing for her upcoming marriage to a Kodagu-based youth, with the engagement already finalised.
According to preliminary information, Vidya’s parents had recently consulted an astrologer regarding her horoscope. The astrologer allegedly predicted a “short lifespan” and suggested a nine-day ritual, culminating in offering a ceremonial thali to a local deity as a remedial measure.
Family members stated that the rituals were being performed as advised. On the ninth day, when her mother went to call her to proceed to the temple, Vidya was found hanging inside her room.
Police sources confirmed that an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) has been registered at Bagalakunte Police Station. The body has been shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Investigators are examining all angles, including whether fear or emotional distress following the astrological prediction played any role. Officials emphasised that the exact cause and circumstances will be determined after completion of the inquiry.
The incident has raised broader questions about the psychological impact of fatalistic predictions and the role of superstition in sensitive personal decisions. Further investigation is underway.
