Bengaluru: The Karnataka government will constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to identify and deport illegal Bangladeshi migrants residing in coffee and tea estates across Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu districts, Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy informed the Legislative Assembly on behalf of the Home Department.

Responding to a notice raised by BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, Ramalinga Reddy stated that as per official records, 370 Bangladeshi nationals were found to be illegally residing in Karnataka, of whom 213 have already been deported.

Yatnal alleged that individuals providing information about illegal Bangladeshi migrants were facing police harassment. He further claimed that a significant number of undocumented migrants continued to live illegally in coffee and tea estates across the Malnad region.

Replying to the allegation, Ramalinga Reddy asserted that illegal Bangladeshi infiltration into Karnataka was not a failure of the state government, but a consequence of migrants entering India through national borders and passing through multiple states before reaching Karnataka. “This is primarily a failure at the central level,” the minister said.

However, he assured the House that the state government would take strict action by identifying illegal migrants through a dedicated SIT and deporting them as per law. He added that agents facilitating illegal migration would also be identified and prosecuted.

The minister further stated that the identity of informants sharing information about illegal migrants would be kept strictly confidential, while cautioning citizens not to take the law into their own hands under any circumstances.
