Bengaluru, January 29: In a move aimed at promoting Swadeshi values and supporting the rural economy, the Karnataka government has issued a circular urging all government officials and employees to voluntarily wear Khadi attire on the first Saturday of every month and during all official government functions, including Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.

The directive was issued by Chief Secretary Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, IAS, on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, describing Khadi not merely as clothing but as a symbol of national pride, unity, and India’s freedom movement.

According to the circular, Khadi production continues to be a crucial pillar of the rural economy, providing direct and indirect livelihood to thousands of spinners and weavers across Karnataka. The government noted that Khadi weavers are now producing garments with modern designs and contemporary styles, making Khadi more relevant for present-day use.

The Chief Secretary has requested all State Government departments, aided institutions, corporations, boards, autonomous bodies, and universities to issue instructions encouraging their officers and staff to adopt Khadi attire out of self-motivation, not compulsion.

The government believes that this initiative will help foster a sense of respect for indigenous products, national identity, unity, self-respect, and social responsibility among public servants, while also reconnecting public service with the ideals of the freedom struggle.

To facilitate access, the circular states that details of 176 Khadi institutions operating across Karnataka, including their addresses and products, are available on the official website https://khadi.karnataka.gov.in.

The move is seen as part of the state government’s broader effort to revive traditional industries, strengthen rural livelihoods, and reinforce Indian cultural values within public institutions.
