BENGALURU:

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday flagged off the Roll on-Roll off railway service between Nelamangala railway station and Bale railway station in Solapur.

Speaking to the media, the CM said the new service is in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stress on multi-modal forms of transport.

Over 42 trucks with or without freight can be transported by a Ro-Ro train. These trucks will be loaded and unloaded at the railway stations concerned. A Ro-Ro train can carry 1,260 tonnes of cargo, including trucks. The system is environmentally friendly, reduces traffic congestion and helps reduce wear-and-tear on trucks.

Now, products ranging from vegetables to manufactured items can be transported between the two stations. It will be beneficial for the APMC market near Nelamangala as well as for industries and transport companies nearby. Earlier, a Ro-Ro service was started between Bengaluru and Solapur on the Konkan Railway.

Minister of state for Railways Suresh Angadi, Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka, Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi and the CM’s political secretary Shankar Gowda Patil were present on the occasion.

Roll-On-Roll-Off (RORO) service is hassle-free, reduces accidents on the road, environment friendly, and presents a win-win situation to truck operators & industries. Happy to flag the maiden RORO train service between Bengaluru & Solapur. My best wishes to all stakeholders! pic.twitter.com/hm2B0S5suI
