Yellow Alert for Bengaluru as Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal Triggers Rain Forecast Across Karnataka

Bengaluru: A low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger widespread rainfall across several parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, over the next few days, according to weather experts.
Meteorologist C.S. Patil said rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely in many districts of the state due to the developing weather system.

Yellow Alert for Bengaluru
Bengaluru has been placed under a Yellow Alert for the next three days, with forecasts indicating light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in several parts of the city.
Wind speeds during thunderstorms may range between 30 to 40 kmph, officials said.
Rain Likely in Multiple Regions
According to C.S. Patil, the low-pressure area has developed over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to nearly 5.8 kilometres above sea level.
Due to its impact:
- South Interior Karnataka districts are likely to receive rain on May 15, 16 and 17
More than 50 percent of several regions could witness light to moderate showers with thunderstorms
Coastal and North Interior Karnataka may also experience significant rainfall activity
Strong Winds Expected
Apart from rainfall, strong winds are also expected in many regions.
In North Interior and Coastal Karnataka, wind speeds could touch 40 to 50 kmph during thunderstorms.
Rainfall May Reduce After May 18
Weather experts stated that rainfall activity over South Interior Karnataka may gradually reduce after May 18.
Similarly, rainfall intensity over Coastal and North Interior Karnataka may temporarily weaken after May 16.
Southwest Monsoon Likely to Be Normal or Slightly Below Normal
Speaking about the broader monsoon outlook, C.S. Patil said the southwest monsoon this year is expected to remain either near normal or slightly below normal.
He explained that current ENSO conditions remain neutral, but there are indications that El Niño conditions could develop after July, which may affect rainfall patterns across India later in the season.
Citizens Advised to Remain Cautious
Authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, especially in areas vulnerable to waterlogging, traffic congestion and strong winds.
Commuters in Bengaluru have also been asked to prepare for possible traffic disruptions during evening rainfall spells over the coming days.
