Capital reports 7 deaths,  state as a whole reports 10 deaths and 337 positive cases

BENGALURU:

The tech city has broken all its previous ‘corona’ records. With 138 new positive cases reported on Friday, Bengaluru stands at the top of the ‘active cases’ table with 531. The state capital also recorded 7 Covid deaths the same day.

Karnataka as a whole reported 337 positive cases on Friday for a tally of 8,281, of which 2,943 are active cases. The state reported a total of 10 deaths, taking the fatalities to 124. Of the active cases, 78 are in ICUs. Of Friday’s positive cases, 93 have an interstate travel history while 11 are overseas returnees.

This surge belies the state government’s earlier claim that it had controlled the spread of the coronavirus in Bengaluru much better than a country like New Zealand. On June 18, Thebengalurulive had reported on the falsity of the government’s claim by showing how Bengaluru alone had the second highest number of active Covid cases in Karnataka (read: https://thebengalurulive.com/comparing-bengaluru-to-nz-was-jumping-the-gun/). In fact, Bengaluru with 531 active cases on Friday has overtaken Kalaburagi, which had the highest active cases hitherto.

As per the health department bulletin, Bengaluru now has a total of 982 positive cases and 58 deaths, with the corresponding figures for Friday being 138 cases and 7 deaths.

Kalaburagi district stands second with 469 active cases and also has the second highest number of 11 deaths. Bidar too has reported 11 deaths, but has 146 active cases.

The other districts with a large number of active cases are: Yadagiri (399), Ballari (272), Raichur (214), Dakshina Kannada (209), Dharwad (123) and Udupi (105).
