Maharashtra alone has ‘contributed’ 526 returnee cases

BENGALURU:

In cricketing terms, one could say Karnataka has scored a century. But there is nothing to rejoice in the state recording a single-day high of 138 positive coronavirus cases on Friday. The day’s count now takes the state’s gruesome tally to 1,743, of which 1,104 are active cases.

The spike in the last few days clearly indicates that Karnataka is experiencing a ‘Maharashtra returnee’ syndrome, as the bulk of the recent figures is accounted for by returnees from the country’s richest and most industrialised state.

Of the 138 cases reported on Friday, 116 have returned from other states — 111 from Maharashtra, 2 each from Telangana and New Delhi, and one from Jharkhand, according to Karnataka Covid-9 spokesperson, minister Suresh Kumar.

As per the health department bulletin, as of Friday evening there were 1,743 Covid-19 cases in the state, a figure that includes 41 deaths and 597 discharges.
