Bengaluru: Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra has demanded that the state government provide a support price for sugarcane growers, arguing that assistance to farmers should not be treated solely as the Centre’s responsibility.
Speaking to the media on October 25, Vijayendra urged the Karnataka government to extend support to cane growers, citing Haryana and Bihar as examples of states providing a support price.
Demand for state assistance to growers
Vijayendra said the sugar industry contributes substantial revenue to Karnataka and argued that the state should therefore help protect farmers’ interests. He criticised the government’s response to growers’ concerns and called on Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to fulfil the state’s responsibilities.
He also credited the Union government’s promotion of ethanol production with adding value to the sector, while maintaining that Karnataka should do more for its cane farmers.
