Bengaluru: A magnitude 3.5 earthquake was recorded in Vijayapura district at 2:04:05 am on September 30, with its epicentre 3.9 km northeast of Basavana Bagewadi, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said.
The monitoring centre assessed the seismic intensity as low and said local vibrations might have been felt within a radius of 50–60 km of the epicentre. It said the community need not panic, citing the low magnitude and intensity.
Epicentre at a depth of 10 km
KSNDMC placed the epicentre in Basavana Bagewadi taluk at latitude 16.604° N and longitude 75.990° E, at a depth of 10 km. The earthquake was recorded by its monitoring network.
The centre listed the epicentre as 7.8 km west of Hunashyal gram panchayat and 11.2 km west of Huvina Hipparagi gram panchayat, both in Basavana Bagewadi taluk. It was also located 31 km northeast of Almatti Dam and 38 km southwest of Vijayapura city, according to the note.
Low intensity; KSNDMC asks residents not to panic
Based on its seismic intensity analysis, KSNDMC said an earthquake of this low intensity was not expected to cause harm to the local community, although people could experience vibrations. This was the monitoring centre’s assessment of the event; the note did not provide a separate field survey of damage or injuries.
The epicentre falls in Seismic Zone III. KSNDMC also said the region showed no structural discontinuities on the tectonic map cited in its analysis.
The information was issued in a note by the Director of KSNDMC on September 30.
