Researchers from KIIT Deemed to be University, India, and Canberra Business School, University of Canberra, Australia, have examined the transformative impact of Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) on consumer behavior. Their study investigates how MAR shapes the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of consumer decision-making in online shopping. Despite its growing presence in the retail sector, little empirical research has explored MAR’s deeper influence beyond adoption rates. This study bridges that gap by assessing how interactivity, system quality, informativeness, and reality congruence affect consumer engagement, purchase intention, and continued use. Grounded in Holbrook and Hirschman’s Experiential Hierarchy Model (EHM), the research highlights the interplay of sensory engagement and rational decision-making in MAR-driven retail. The study was conducted in two phases: first, a survey was carried out to identify a suitable product and shopping platform. Then, an experimental study involving 125 female participants was conducted using the TIRA app, chosen for its advanced virtual try-on features.

Interactive Shopping: The Power of Engagement

The research confirms that interactivity is a game-changer in MAR-enabled shopping, offering an engaging and immersive experience that significantly influences consumer behavior. Participants in the MAR group reported higher levels of enjoyment and emotional involvement, reinforcing the idea that digital interactions create a more personal and satisfying shopping experience. The ability to try on products virtually, as seen in beauty retail, enhances decision-making and increases purchase intention. This aligns with previous studies that found higher consumer trust and confidence when engaging with interactive digital elements. The study emphasizes that retailers adopting MAR should focus on engagement-driven design, ensuring that users can manipulate and explore virtual products seamlessly.

System Quality: The Key to Trust and Satisfaction

Another major finding is that system quality directly impacts consumer trust, app attitudes, and user satisfaction. In the MAR group, consumers had higher expectations of app performance, including speed, responsiveness, and technical reliability. A smooth MAR experience led to greater trust in the retailer and a stronger likelihood of continued app usage. In contrast, the non-MAR group relied more on traditional usability factors like ease of navigation and clear product information. This suggests that MAR retailers must invest in top-tier technical infrastructure to maintain seamless interactivity, preventing technical glitches that could break immersion and negatively impact consumer confidence. The study underscores that a well-optimized AR experience enhances brand perception, encouraging repeat usage and long-term loyalty.

The Role of Reality Congruence in Decision Confidence

One of the study’s most striking discoveries is the impact of reality congruence, or how well digital representations align with real-world products. Participants who perceived a high degree of realism in AR visuals felt more confident in their purchase decisions, which boosted purchase intentions and continuous app use. This highlights the need for retailers to invest in highly accurate and lifelike AR modeling to maintain credibility and trust. Unlike traditional online shopping, where consumers rely on written details and static images, MAR reduces uncertainty by offering a near-physical experience. When executed well, this can bridge the gap between online and in-store shopping, helping consumers make decisions with the same confidence they would have in a physical store.

Shaping the Future of Retail with MAR

The study’s findings have far-reaching implications for retailers. MAR is not just a trend but a revolutionary tool that can drive higher engagement, satisfaction, and sales. Retailers should prioritize interactive design, optimize system performance, and enhance reality congruence to ensure a seamless and effective MAR experience. Balancing hedonic (fun, sensory enjoyment) and utilitarian (practical, decision-supporting) aspects is crucial, as MAR blurs the line between entertainment and functionality. For luxury brands, the focus should be on emotional engagement, whereas more functional product categories should emphasize practical benefits such as product customization and utility-focused AR tools.

While the research provides compelling insights, it has some limitations. The sample group consisted only of female consumers aged 18-30, meaning the findings may not apply to broader demographics, including older users or male consumers. Additionally, the study was limited to beauty products, leaving open questions about how MAR affects consumer behavior across other categories like electronics, home goods, or fashion. Future research should explore longitudinal effects of MAR, examining how long-term use influences consumer loyalty and shopping habits. There is also potential to investigate the impact of cognitive factors like technology readiness and user learning curves in MAR adoption.

Ultimately, this study demonstrates that MAR is reshaping the future of retail by merging interactive technology with traditional shopping behaviors. It is no longer a novelty but a necessity for brands seeking to enhance customer engagement, trust, and conversion rates. As digital commerce continues to evolve, businesses that embrace MAR will have a competitive edge in creating personalized, engaging, and confidence-inspiring shopping experiences.
