BENGALURU:
Obviously seized of the ad hoc and callous manner in which funerals of Covid victims have been conducted so far, the Karnataka High Court has instructed the state government to prepare standard guidelines for such funerals.
Among the HC’s suggestions are:
1) Rules should be laid down for religious and traditional funerals.
2) In some traditions, women cannot go to the cemetery. So they should be allowed (to take part) before the final rites are conducted.
3) An appropriate rule should be drawn up regarding the funeral of deceased persons with no heirs.
4) Death certificates should mention if the deceased was a Covid case.
The HC also questioned the ethicality of mentioning ‘Covid’ in the death certificate even where the death was owing to other causes.
