Subcutaneous fat, which females are more likely to store in areas like the backs of their arms, hips, and buttocks, is thought to protect against brain inflammation, which can cause issues like dementia and stroke, at least until menopause. Visceral adiposity, which is known to be much more inflammatory, is more likely to accumulate around the major organs in the abdominal cavity in males of virtually any age. Males are also thought to be at a significantly higher risk for diseases associated with inflammation, such as heart attacks and stroke before females reach menopause.
