Puttur/Bengaluru: Following the stampede-like situation at the Ashok Janamana Diwali Gift Distribution event held at the Puttur Taluk Stadium, MLA Ashok Kumar Rai issued a public apology to the citizens, acknowledging that several people fell ill after being trapped in the crowd.

In his statement, the Puttur MLA said the number of attendees far exceeded expectations, and heavy rain and wind during the afternoon worsened the situation, causing discomfort and breathlessness among the crowd.

“A few people fell ill after being stuck in the crowd. They were immediately given medical attention. Though we had made elaborate arrangements, the crowd turnout was much higher than anticipated, which led to some confusion,” Rai stated.

He further expressed regret for the inconvenience caused:

“If anyone felt hurt or distressed by the incident, I sincerely apologise. Despite the difficulties, the gift distribution continued till 9:30 p.m. I extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported and cooperated during the event,” he added.

The Diwali gift distribution event, attended by thousands and inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, had seen over 11 people faint due to overcrowding and lack of ventilation, prompting widespread discussion on event management and safety protocols in large political gatherings.
