Bengaluru South MP and 3 BJP MLAs had exposed racket in Covid beds allotment in city

BENGALURU:

Call it a logistical miracle! Bengaluru did not have a single bed for Covid-19 patients on Tuesday afternoon, but seven hours later the BBMP portal showed nearly 3,000 beds available in the city’s government and private hospitals combined.

All thanks to Bengaluru South Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya, who exposed the hold of touts on BBMP’s Covid bed allotment system while genuine Covid-19 patients were left high and dry.

screen grab taken at 10pm on Tuesday.

The BJP Youth Morcha’s National President had earlier on Tuesday alleged that beds were being blocked and booked by touts even as serious Covid patients were dying for want of a hospital bed in Bengaluru.

Surya, accompanied by Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy, Basavanagudi MLA Ravi Subramanya and Chickpet MLA Uday Garudhachar, had visited BBMP’s South zone war room around 2.30 pm. The MLAs had pointed out that even their calls were not being picked up by officials. The group met Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa later in the evening and demanded strict action against the culprits.

Thanks to the MP and MLAs’ activism, by around 10 pm on Tuesday BBMP’s dashboard started displaying the availability of nearly 3,000 beds.
