No garbage collection fee of Rs 200 per house, says BBMP boss

Date:

Administrator Gaurav Gupta rules out the fee which is mentioned in SWM bye-laws

BENGALURU:

To the relief of lakhs of house owners in the city, BBMP Administrator Gaurav Gupta has clarified that there is no proposal to impose a service charge on garbage collection from January 1.

Gupta rescinded an earlier BBMP announcement on a monthly garbage collection fee during a presser attended by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to launch the ‘Bengaluru Mission 2022’ project on Thursday at Vidhana Soudha.

Gupta stated, “There is no proposal to collect a service charge in return for BBMP’s garbage collection.”

In fact, the civic body already collects an SWM cess, depending on the size of the property, between Rs 200 and Rs 600. The Palike had earlier claimed that the BJP government had issued an order on June 4 notifying the bye-laws on solid waste management, as per which residential waste generators in all categories would have to pay Rs 200 per month towards solid waste collection services.

Not just residential, even commercial and institutional waste generators would have to pay Rs 500 to Rs 1,400 per month and Rs 3,500 for generating 25 kg of waste, Rs 7,000 for 50 kg of waste and Rs 14,000 for 100 kg per day.

The bye-laws even include owners of vacant sites who will end up paying 20 paise per month for one square foot on a 30×40 site.
