New peak of 346 Covid deaths in Bengaluru, 592 across Karnataka

Karnataka’s case fatality rate of 1.21% is highest since March last year

While the daily infections across Karnataka seem to have plateaued over the past three days, what has rung alarm bells is the case fatality rate, which at 1.21% is the highest since the pandemic broke out in March 2020. On Friday, Karnataka reported a whopping 592 deaths for a case fatality rate of 1.21%. Bengaluru alone registered a new high of 346 deaths on Friday.

This factor is one of the triggers for the government on Friday going ahead with further restrictions till May 24. Karnataka had reported an earlier high of 328 deaths on Thursday, May 6.

The number of positive cases crossed the 40 thousand mark for the second straight day with 46,000 infections. On Thursday, Karnataka had witnessed 49,058 infections and on Wednesday saw 50,112 positive cases.

Speaking to the media at Chikkaballapur, Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said Friday’s fatalities were the highest-ever reported in Karnataka since the pandemic broke out last year. “The death rate has risen to 1.21% with 592 deaths. I have spoken to the CM and have told him that we should go for a lockdown for at least 14 days to break the chain of transmission,” he said.

Karnataka on Friday reported 48,781 COVID-19 deaths and 592 related deaths, taking the total caseload and fatalities to 17.38 lakh and 17,804 respectively, the health department said.

Bengaluru Urban alone accounted for 21,376 infections.

The day also saw 28,623 patients getting discharged.

Cumulatively, 5,36,641 active positive cases have been confirmed in Karnataka out of which Bengaluru has 3,41,978, a health department bulletin said.

Tumakuru followed Bengaluru Urban in number of infections with 3,040, while it was 2,422 in Hassan, 2,246 in Mysuru, 1,722 in Kalaburagi, followed by other districts

Among the 592deaths reported on Wednesday, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 346, 24 in Ballari, 22 in Mysuru, 20 in Hassan, 19 in Kalaburagi, followed by other districts.
