Memorials to Karnataka’s legendary freedom fighter coming up at Nandagada and Sangolli: CM

BENGALURU:

The state government is set to establish a military school named after revered freedom fighter Sangolli Rayanna at a cost of Rs 180 crore, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Wednesday.

Speaking after garlanding the statue of Rayanna on his 191st Remembrance Day, the CM said the state government has already released Rs 55 crore for the purpose. Construction work on the school would be completed this year.

Bommai said discussions are on with the Defence Ministry to adopt the school, and the Defence Ministry is likely to convert it into a military school. Hostel and other facilities are coming up on a 100-acre plot.

Inspiring youth

Work on developing Rayanna’s tomb at Nandagada, the spot where he attained martyrdom, would be taken up. Approval has been given for developing a rock garden on a 10-acre plot at his birth place of Sangolli. These memorials are being built to provide a glimpse into the life of Rayanna for the younger generation, Bommai said.

“The state government is committed to keeping alive Rayanna’s ideals of patriotism, integrity and valour. Our administration will follow his ideals. Last year, orders were issued to celebrate Rayanna’s birth anniversary as a government programme within an hour of receiving a request,” Bommai said.

Rayanna’s portrait

Orders would be issued immediately to have Rayanna’s portrait displayed in all schools and colleges, Bommai declared.

Freedom fighters’ names for Bengaluru roads

Programmes would be formulated to spread Rayanna’s principles and ideals. Karnataka has a glorious history of freedom fighters. Member of Parliament PC Mohan has submitted a request to name some roads in Bengaluru after freedom fighters. A suitable decision would be taken in this regard, Bommai said.

Rayanna’s statue in New Delhi

Referring to a statue of Kittur Rani Chennamma in New Delhi, the CM said, “Rayanna should be present wherever there is Chennamma.” A letter has been written to the authorities to install Rayanna’s statue at a suitable spot in New Delhi, Bommai said.

Statues in Belagavi

Referring to recent incidents of vandalising of Rayanna’s statue, Bommai said Rayanna’s and Chennamma’s statues would be installed in front of the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi, and talks had been held in this regard with sculptors.
