Labour Minister hints at “excessive use” of social media as reason for transfer

BENGALURU:

In less than 24 hours, IAS officer P Manivannan who was relieved as Labour Department Secretary and Information Department Principal Secretary, has been posted as Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department Secretary.

Manivanan will replace the current incumbent AB Ibrahim.

One of the theories going around is that Manivannan was transfered after a few legislators complained to Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar that ration kits and food packets were not reaching the migrants staying in relief camps.

Speaking to reporters at Karwar, Labour Minister Shivaram Hebbar said in reply to a query on Manivannan’s transfer, “Excessive use of social networks poses a risk when it is beyond our discretion and authority,” adding that “those who use technology should be aware of their limitations.”

Hebbar added, “It is not known on what ground the Chief Minister has issued his transfer order. He (Manivannan) wrote on behalf of workers on social networking sites and that caused considerable debate at the national level. The Labour Department needs to act as a bridge between workers and employers. There is ample opportunity for the department to take action as per the law.”
