Major fire claims two lives in Bengaluru’s Bommanahalli

Mother and daughter, who had just returned from US, perish in apartment blaze; fire tenders take 4 hours to put out fire

Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy and DGP (Fire Services) Amar Kumar Pandey rush to spot; building occupants evacuated

BENGALURU:

Two persons perished in a major fire that broke out in a Bommanahalli apartment on Tuesday evening. As per reports, the incident took place in Devarachikkanahalli (ward 175).

Video clips of the blaze show a woman engulfed in flames while neighbours and onlookers watch helplessly.

Fire due to LPG leak/short circuit?

One ALP (aerial ladder platform) vehicle and three fire tenders were rushed to the spot and took around 4 hours to douse the blaze, which raged in one flat on the second floor. DGP (Fire Services) Amar Kumar Pandey too visited the spot. The police are yet to ascertain the reason behind the fire, but prima facie it appears to have been sparked either by an LPG cylinder leak or an electrical short circuit.

The victims have been identified as Lakshmi Devi (82) and her daughter Bhagay Rekha (59), who were in the same flat on the 2rd floor of the four-storeyed building — Ashrith Apartment which has 72 flats. The unfortunate duo had just returned from the US on Monday. Bheemsen Rao, husband of Bhagya Rekha, resides with their daughter in an adjoining flat in the building.

Desperate cries for help

Local MLA Satish Reddy, who visited the spot on the instructions of the CM, told TheBengaluruLive that according to Bheemsen Rao, his wife frantically called their daughter about the blaze, but it was too late to save Lakshmi Devi and Bhagya Rekha. Reddy further said that all the building residents were evacuated after the incident, and food and other arrangements had been made for them.
