Urban Development Minister Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah inaugurates stalls at Mahila Dasara in Mysuru.
Bengaluru: Urban Development Minister Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah called for an end to gender discrimination and restrictions on women while inaugurating Mahila Dasara at J.K. Ground in Mysuru on October 13.
He also opened exhibition and sales stalls featuring goods made by self-reliant women as part of the programme organised by the Women and Children’s Dasara Subcommittee during the Mysuru Dasara celebrations.
Equality beyond ceremonial respect
Yathindra said women play a central role at every stage of family and social life. The practice of worshipping women as deities while simultaneously imposing restrictive customs on them must be eliminated, he said.
Drawing on the ideals of equality taught by Buddha, Basavanna and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, he said bringing women into the mainstream and rejecting gender discrimination was a shared responsibility.
Recognising women’s achievements
Women are making significant achievements in education, sports, social service and other fields, the minister said. Mahila Dasara had been designed to recognise their talent and honour such accomplishments.
He commended the subcommittee’s effort in organising the programme. The exhibition and sales stalls provided a venue for women to display and sell the products they had made.
