Karnataka reports five new Omicron cases, tally now 8

Amid rising cases, Health Ministry says no increase in rate of hospitalisation or death due to Covid

New Omicron cases in Karnataka are returnees from UK, Delhi, Delhi, Nigeria and South Africa

BENGALURU:

In a major and worrisome development, Karnataka reported five new cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in Bengaluru on Thursday.

With this, Karnataka’s Omicron tally goes up to 8 since detection of the first case — a South African who had visited Bengaluru last month and surreptitiously flew back to his country via Dubai.

Karnataka’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr K Sudhakar’s tweet on the new cases reads: “Five more cases of #Omicron have been detected in Karnataka today: 19 yr male returning from UK, 36 yr male returning from Delhi, 70 yr female returning from Delhi, 52 yr male returning from Nigeria, 33 yr male returning from South Africa.”

Age: 19 years, female
Sample collection: 13/12/2021
Place of sample collection: Airport, Bengaluru
Report: Positive (13/12/21)
Date of travel: 13/12/2021
From: United Kingdom
Vaccination status: Vaccinated with 2 doses of Covishield on 19th May and 12th
Aug
 
1. Travelled from United Kingdom on 13/12/2021 with a negative report and was screened and tested positive at KIA Bengaluru.
2. Shifted in an ambulance from airport to Bowring Hospital on the same day.
3. On patient’s request, shifted to a private hospital’s designated ward on
14/12/2021.
4. Patient is asymptomatic and vitals are stable.  
5. No primary contacts, as she travelled directly from airport to hospital.  
 
Omicron case 5

 

Age: 52 years, male
Date of sample collection: 13/12/2021
Place of sample collection: Airport
Bengaluru report: Positive (13/12/21)
Date of travel: 13/12/2021
From: Nigeria
Vaccination status: Vaccinated with 2 doses of Covishield in Nigeria
 
1. Travelled from Nigeria on 13/12/2021 with a negative report.
2. He was screened and tested positive at KIA Bengaluru.
3. He had a connecting flight to Belagavi in the next two
hours and was given permission.
4. Took a flight to Belagavi on 14/12/2021, received positive report.
5. He immediately shifted himself to a separate home for isolation in Belagavi.
6. Isolated at district hospital, Belagavi and now stable.  
7. Two primary contacts quarantined and tested via RT-PCR.  

Omicron case 6

Age: 70 Years /Female
Date of Sample Collection: 05/12/2021
Place of Sample Collection: Private Lab, Mahadevapura, Bengaluru
Report: Positive (06/12/21)
Date of Travel: 03/12/2021
From: Delhi
Vaccination status: Vaccinated with 2 doses – Covishield (2nd Dose – 16-06-21)

  1. Travelled from Delhi on 03/12/2021 – after attending a wedding
  2. She was subjected to RTPCR on 5/12/2021 as She was a primary contact a Omicron confirmed case in New Delhi
  3. Tested positive on 06/12/21 – with Mild Symptoms
  4. Shifted to Private Hospital for further management
  5. Primary contacts – 3 (2 positive) & Secondary contacts – 2 (negative)

Omicron case 7

Age: 36 Years /Male
Date of Sample Collection: 05/12/2021
Place of Sample Collection: Private Lab, Mahadevapura, Bengaluru
Report: Positive (06/12/21)
Date of Travel: 03/12/2021
From: Delhi
Vaccination status: Vaccinated with 2 doses – Covishield (2nd Dose – 17-08-21)

  1. Travelled from Delhi on 03/12/2021 – after attending a wedding
  2. He was subjected to RTPCR on 5/12/2021 as he was a primary contact a
    Omicron confirmed case in New Delhi
  3. Tested positive on 06/12/21 – asymptomatic
  4. Shifted to Private Hospital for further management
  5. Primary contacts – 3 (2 positive) & Secondary contacts – Nil

Omicron case 8

Age: 33 Years /Male
Date of Sample Collection: 10/12/2021
Place of Sample Collection: Private Lab, Bengaluru
Report: Positive (11/12/21)
Date of Travel: 09/12/2021
From: Delhi (South Africa – Delhi – Bengaluru)
Vaccination status: Vaccinated with 2 doses – Covishield (Dose 1 – 22 May;
Dose 2 – 27 August 21)

  1. 08/12/21 Travelled from South Africa to Delhi, further from Delhi –
    Bengaluru on the same day
  2. He was tested at Delhi airport and was Negative for Covid 19
  3. He isolated at home on 09/12/21
  4. Developed mild symptoms on 10/12/21
  5. He voluntarily got tested for Covid 19 at a private lab on 10/12/21
  6. Tested positive on 11/12/21
  7. Shifted to Private Hospital for further management
  8. Primary contacts – 4 (All Negative) and Secondary contacts – 25 (All
    Negative)
