Bengaluru/Koppal: In a major crackdown following a series of viral social media reels, authorities in Koppal have launched a large-scale operation against illegal sand mining. The action comes after videos surfaced of alleged sand mafia members, including close associates of a local MLA, openly flaunting their illegal activities online.
The reels, shot at an illegal sand mining site near Hire Sindhogi, featured individuals – reportedly including the brother of a local gang leader – boasting of their dominance in the sand trade. The videos, which quickly went viral, prompted swift action by the Department of Mines and Geology, in coordination with the Revenue, Police, and Forest Departments.
Led by Tahsildar Veerya Bhujaniyadanta Riyaz, the multi-departmental task force raided the Hirehalla riverbed, seizing over 50 boats used in unauthorized sand extraction. Authorities estimate the seized equipment to be worth several lakhs of rupees.
Initial investigations reveal that many of the boats belonged to individuals reportedly linked to Koppal MLA Raghavendra Hitnal, raising questions about political connections shielding the illegal operations. The sand miners were allegedly operating without any legal permits and had invested over ₹3 lakh in the illicit setup.
Interestingly, no JCBs or Hitachi earthmovers were found during the raids, sparking speculation that insiders may have tipped off the sand mafia in advance. Despite this, officials say the crackdown is only the beginning. The operation will continue for at least three more days, and further seizures and arrests are expected.
Officials stressed that this is one of the largest anti-sand mafia actions in Koppal’s history and vowed not to bow to any political pressure. “We are committed to dismantling this illegal racket. No one is above the law,” a senior officer stated.
This incident also highlights how social media reels, initially meant for self-promotion, have unintentionally led to the exposure of criminal networks. While reels have become a tool of entertainment and fame for many, in this case, they turned into evidence – forcing the administration to act.
