1971 Bangladesh liberation war was a great example of India’s military prowess: Karnataka CM
The state government has raised the cash rewards for military awardees, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced here on Thursday.
Paying tributes at the War Memorial in the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment Training Centre as part of the Swarna Vijay Divas celebrations to mark the golden jubilee celebration of India’s victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan, the CM said he was proud to pay his respects to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country.
Announcing the state government’s decision, he said the reward for Param Vir Chakra awardees has been raised from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 1.5 crore for Mahavir Chakra from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 1 crore, for Ashoka Chakra from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 1.5 crore, for Keerti Chakra from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 1 crore, for Veer Chakra from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, for Shaurya Chakra from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, for Sena/Nauka/Vayu Sena Medal from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 15 lakh, and for Mentioned in Dispatches from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 15 lakh.

‘Textbook victory’
Praising the valour of the Indian military, especially in the 1971 war against Pakistan, Bommai said, “It exemplified the power, tact, valour and coordination of our armed forces. In the 13-day war, 3,863 soldiers were martyred and over 9,000 injured. India scored a resounding victory as over 90,000 Pakistani troops surrendered. It was a great example of battle management.” He added, “Bangladesh is celebrating its Independence Day because of the helping hand extended by the Indian military forces.”

Tributes were also paid on the occasion to Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and others who lost their lives in the recent helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu. Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, Major General JV Prasad and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
