Bengaluru: In a key decision taken at the state cabinet meeting held at Nandigiri Dhama on Tuesday, the Karnataka government approved the renaming of Bengaluru Rural district to Bengaluru North, and Baggepalli town in Chikkaballapura district to Bhagyanagara.
The cabinet also decided to name Bengaluru City University after former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, further cementing its intent to rebrand key institutions and regions under symbolic identities.
This follows a similar move earlier to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South, reflecting a pattern in geographical reclassifications within the Bengaluru division.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the proposals were passed in the presence of cabinet ministers, with local MLAs urging the government to adopt culturally and historically resonant names. It was noted that the term “Baggepalli” was seen by some as outdated, and the shift to “Bhagyanagara” aligns with regional identity preferences.
The cabinet also allocated ₹250 crore for Bengaluru division’s development and ₹23,251 crore for the ambitious Yettinahole water project, reinforcing the state’s infrastructure and resource priorities.
These decisions are expected to be formalised through official notifications in the coming weeks.
